Dodi's father talks and talks and talk and presents his conspiracy theory around Paris car crash of August 1997

The paparazzi were never more frenzied than when they were pursuing Diana, the Princess of Wales. And now, more than 10 years after she died in a Paris tunnel, the inquest into her death has media worldwide captivated. Herewith, a compendium of stories from a variety of sources – both salacious and venerable.

The New York Times played it safe with “Diana Inquest Hears Fayed’s Accusations”. They recounted how Mohamed al-Fayed, the owner of Harrod’s, a swank U.K. department store, read a statement in which he posits that it wasn’t an accidental car crash that killed Diana and her boyfriend and his son, Dodi Fayed but “a conspiracy led by Prince Philip, now 86, the husband of Queen Elizabeth. And, he said, it was “executed” by the British and French secret intelligence services, with help from the C.I.A.”

Fayed also told the court that Diana had confided to him that she was pregnant, although medical experts who have testified at the inquest have said there was no evidence that she was pregnant when she died.

Over at MSNBC.com, the headline was more appealing (and Fayed’s named earned a new spelling): “Al Fayed details alleged Diana conspiracy”

Their lead sentence cut right to the heart of the matter with a provocative phrase, “that dark forces within the country’s establishment would not accept a marriage between a princess and a Muslim.” And then there is Fayed’s laugh-out-loud assertion that Prince Charles was desperate to get Diana out of the way so he could marry his longtime lover, Camilla Parker Bowles. Fayed said, “They finished her, they murdered her and now he is happy. He married his crocodile wife and he is happy with that.” Watch as the moniker “crocodile wife” catches on.

Finally, CNN.com's headline writers had some fun with “Al Fayed attacks UK royals as ‘Dracula family’”. Naturally they took the words right out of Fayed’s mouth. "Diana suffered for 20 years from this Dracula family," Al Fayed said Monday. "I will not rest until I die. If I lose everything to find the truth." He also told the court that Diana told him she had a wooden box with her initials on it containing all the details about why she feared for her life. “He added she told him that if anything ever happened to her, he needed to know about the box. After the crash, however, the contents of the box were stolen before he could get to them, he said.”

This drama clobbers the news of what’s happening to Britney Spears or Paris Hilton’s new shoe collection at Macy’s and it’s even more tantalizing than the upcoming Oscars.
