Ending a 60 plus year career, Marvel Entertainment has killed off Captain America.
Created in 1941 to encourage patriotism during WWII, Captain America has been a champion ever since. Armed with only his shield and his strength, he has conquered foe after foe after foe, no matter what the odds. But that run has come to an end. In the latest issue of Captain America, our hero is shot down by a sniper as he leaves a courthouse, according to the New York Daily News. Co-creator Joe Simon regrets Marvel's decision in light of current political and global events. "We really need him now," he said. For those of you that don't know the Captain America story, a hero is born when average citizen Steve Rogers agrees to take a Super Soldier Serum after being rejected from the Army because of his puny health. The serum transforms Rogers into a mega-man, complete with super strength, a Stars N' Stripes costume and a lethal knowledge of martial arts. Marvel acknowledges that resurrections aren't out of the question when it comes to comic-book characters, so who knows? But in the meantime, we'll have to overcome evil without the help of our 66 year-old hero. The latest edition of Captain America hit your favorite comic book shelves today (3/7/07).
